| "Will to Truth" do ye call it, ye wisest ones, that which impelleth you and
maketh you ardent?

| Will for the thinkableness of all being: thus do _I_ call your will!

Wille zur Denkbarkeit alles Seienden: also heisse ich euren
Willen! |
| All being would ye MAKE thinkable: for ye doubt with good reason whether
it be already thinkable.
|
Alles Seiende wollt ihr erst denkbar machen : denn ihr
zweifelt mit gutem Misstrauen, ob es schon denkbar ist. |
| But it shall accommodate and bend itself to you! So willeth your will.
Smooth shall it become and subject to the spirit, as its mirror and
reflection.
|
Aber es soll sich euch fügen und biegen! So will's euer Wille.
Glatt soll es werden und dem Geiste unterthan, als sein Spiegel
und Widerbild. |
| That is your entire will, ye wisest ones, as a Will to Power; and even when
ye speak of good and evil, and of estimates of value.
|
Das ist euer ganzer Wille, ihr Weisesten, als ein Wille zur
Macht; und auch wenn ihr vom Guten und Bösen redet und von
den Werthschätzungen. |
| Ye would still create a world before which ye can bow the knee: such is
your ultimate hope and ecstasy.
|
Schaffen wollt ihr noch die Welt, vor der ihr knien könnt: so
ist es eure letzte Hoffnung und Trunkenheit. |
| The ignorant, to be sure, the people--they are like a river on which a boat
floateth along: and in the boat sit the estimates of value, solemn and
disguised.
|
Die Unweisen freilich, das Volk, - die sind gleich dem
Flusse, auf dem ein Nachen weiter schwimmt: und im Nachen
sitzen feierlich und vermummt die Werthschätzungen. |
| Your will and your valuations have ye put on the river of becoming; it
betrayeth unto me an old Will to Power, what is believed by the people as
good and evil.
|
Euren Willen und eure Werthe setztet ihr auf den Fluss des
Werdens; einen alten Willen zur Macht verräth mir, was vom
Volke als gut und böse geglaubt wird. |
| It was ye, ye wisest ones, who put such guests in this boat, and gave them
pomp and proud names--ye and your ruling Will!
|
Ihr wart es, ihr Weisesten, die solche Gäste in diesen Nachen
setzten und ihnen Prunk und stolze Namen gaben, - ihr und
euer herrschender Wille! |
| Onward the river now carrieth your boat: it MUST carry it. A small matter
if the rough wave foameth and angrily resisteth its keel!

Weiter trägt nun der Fluss euren Nachen: er muss ihn
tragen. Wenig thut's, ob die gebrochene Welle schäumt und zornig
dem Kiele widerspricht! |
| It is not the river that is your danger and the end of your good and evil,
ye wisest ones: but that Will itself, the Will to Power--the unexhausted,
procreating life-will.
|
Nicht der Fluss ist eure Gefahr und das Ende eures Guten und
Bösen, ihr Weisesten: sondern jener Wille selber, der Wille zur
Macht, - der unerschöpfte zeugende Lebens-Wille. |
| But that ye may understand my gospel of good and evil, for that purpose
will I tell you my gospel of life, and of the nature of all living things.

Aber damit ihr mein Wort versteht vom Guten und Bösen:
dazu will ich euch noch mein Wort vom Leben sagen und von der
Art alles Lebendigen. |
| The living thing did I follow; I walked in the broadest and narrowest paths
to learn its nature.
|
Dem Lebendigen gieng ich nach, ich gieng die grössten und die
kleinsten Wege, dass ich seine Art erkenne. |
| With a hundred-faced mirror did I catch its glance when its mouth was shut,
so that its eye might speak unto me. And its eye spake unto me.
|
Mit hundertfachem Spiegel fieng ich noch seinen Blick auf,
wenn ihm der Mund geschlossen war: dass sein Auge mir rede.
Und sein Auge redete mir. |
| But wherever I found living things, there heard I also the language of
obedience. All living things are obeying things.
|
Aber, wo ich nur Lebendiges fand, da hörte ich auch die Rede
vom Gehorsame. Alles Lebendige ist ein Gehorchendes. |
| And this heard I secondly: Whatever cannot obey itself, is commanded.
Such is the nature of living things.
|
Und diess ist das Zweite: Dem wird befohlen, der sich nicht
selber gehorchen kann. So ist es des Lebendigen Art. |
| This, however, is the third thing which I heard--namely, that commanding is
more difficult than obeying. And not only because the commander beareth
the burden of all obeyers, and because this burden readily crusheth him:--
|
Diess aber ist das Dritte, was ich hörte: dass Befehlen schwerer
ist, als Gehorchen. Und nicht nur, dass der Befehlende die Last
aller Gehorchenden trägt, und dass leicht ihn diese Last
zerdrückt: - |
| An attempt and a risk seemed all commanding unto me; and whenever it
commandeth, the living thing risketh itself thereby.
|
Ein Versuch und Wagniss erschien mir in allem Befehlen; und
stets, wenn es befiehlt, wagt das Lebendige sich selber dran. |
| Yea, even when it commandeth itself, then also must it atone for its
commanding. Of its own law must it become the judge and avenger and
victim.
|
Ja noch, wenn es sich selber befiehlt: auch da noch muss es sein
Befehlen büssen. Seinem eignen Gesetze muss es Richter und
Rächer und Opfer werden. |
| How doth this happen! so did I ask myself. What persuadeth the living
thing to obey, and command, and even be obedient in commanding?
|
Wie geschieht diess doch! so fragte ich mich. Was überredet das
Lebendige, dass es gehorcht und befiehlt und befehlend noch
Gehorsam übt? |
| Hearken now unto my word, ye wisest ones! Test it seriously, whether I
have crept into the heart of life itself, and into the roots of its heart!
|
Hört mir nun mein Wort, ihr Weisesten! Prüft es ernstlich, ob
ich dem Leben selber in's Herz kroch und bis in die Wurzeln
seines Herzens! |
| Wherever I found a living thing, there found I Will to Power; and even in
the will of the servant found I the will to be master.
|
Wo ich Lebendiges fand, da fand ich Willen zur Macht; und
noch im Willen des Dienenden fand ich den Willen, Herr zu
sein. |
| That to the stronger the weaker shall serve--thereto persuadeth he his will
who would be master over a still weaker one. That delight alone he is
unwilling to forego.
|
Dass dem Stärkeren diene das Schwächere, dazu überredet es
sein Wille, der über noch Schwächeres Herr sein will: dieser Lust
allein mag es nicht entrathen. |
| And as the lesser surrendereth himself to the greater that he may have
delight and power over the least of all, so doth even the greatest
surrender himself, and staketh--life, for the sake of power.
|
Und wie das Kleinere sich dem Grösseren hingiebt, dass es
Lust und Macht am Kleinsten habe: also giebt sich auch das
Grösste noch hin und setzt um der Macht willen - das Leben
dran. |
| It is the surrender of the greatest to run risk and danger, and play dice
for death.
|
Das ist die Hingebung des Grössten, dass es Wagniss ist und
Gefahr und um den Tod ein Würfelspielen. |
| And where there is sacrifice and service and love-glances, there also is
the will to be master. By by-ways doth the weaker then slink into the
fortress, and into the heart of the mightier one--and there stealeth power.
|
Und wo Opferung und Dienste und Liebesblicke sind: auch
da ist Wille, Herr zu sein. Auf Schleichwegen schleicht sich da
der Schwächere in die Burg und bis in's Herz dem Mächtigeren
- und stiehlt da Macht. |
| And this secret spake Life herself unto me. "Behold," said she, "I am that
WHICH MUST EVER SURPASS ITSELF.
|
Und diess Geheimniss redete das Leben selber zu mir. Siehe,
sprach es, ich bin das, was sich immer selber überwinden muss. |
| To be sure, ye call it will to procreation, or impulse towards a goal,
towards the higher, remoter, more manifold: but all that is one and the
same secret.
|
``Freilich, ihr heisst es Wille zur Zeugung oder Trieb zum
Zwecke, zum Höheren, Ferneren, Vielfacheren: aber all diess ist
Eins und Ein Geheimniss. |
| Rather would I succumb than disown this one thing; and verily, where there
is succumbing and leaf-falling, lo, there doth Life sacrifice itself--for
power!

``Lieber noch gehe ich unter, als dass ich diesem Einen absagte;
und wahrlich, wo es Untergang giebt und Blätterfallen, siehe,
da opfert sich Leben - um Macht! |
| That I have to be struggle, and becoming, and purpose, and cross-purpose--
ah, he who divineth my will, divineth well also on what CROOKED paths it
hath to tread!

``Dass ich Kampf sein muss und Werden und Zweck und der
Zwecke Widerspruch: ach, wer meinen Willen erräth, erräth wohl
auch, auf welchen krummen Wegen er gehen muss! |
| Whatever I create, and however much I love it,--soon must I be adverse to
it, and to my love: so willeth my will.
|
``Was ich auch schaffe und wie ich's auch liebe, - bald muss
ich Gegner ihm sein und meiner Liebe: so will es mein Wille. |
| And even thou, discerning one, art only a path and footstep of my will:
verily, my Will to Power walketh even on the feet of thy Will to Truth!
|
``Und auch du, Erkennender, bist nur ein Pfad und Fusstapfen
meines Willens: wahrlich, mein Wille zur Macht wandelt auch
auf den Füssen deines Willens zur Wahrheit! |
| He certainly did not hit the truth who shot at it the formula: 'Will to
existence': that will--doth not exist!
|
``Der traf freilich die Wahrheit nicht, der das Wort nach ihr
schoss vom ``Willen zum Dasein'': diesen Willen - giebt es nicht! |
| For what is not, cannot will; that, however, which is in existence--how
could it still strive for existence!
|
``Denn: was nicht ist, das kann nicht wollen; was aber im Dasein
ist, wie könnte das noch zum Dasein wollen! |
| Only where there is life, is there also will: not, however, Will to Life,
but--so teach I thee--Will to Power!
|
``Nur, wo Leben ist, da ist auch Wille: aber nicht Wille zum
Leben, sondern - so lehre ich's dich - Wille zur Macht! |
| Much is reckoned higher than life itself by the living one; but out of the
very reckoning speaketh--the Will to Power!"--

``Vieles ist dem Lebenden höher geschätzt, als Leben selber;
doch aus dem Schätzen selber heraus redet - der Wille zur
Macht!'' - |
| Thus did Life once teach me: and thereby, ye wisest ones, do I solve you
the riddle of your hearts.
|
Also lehrte mich einst das Leben: und daraus löse ich euch,
ihr Weisesten, noch das Räthsel eures Herzens. |
| Verily, I say unto you: good and evil which would be everlasting--it doth
not exist! Of its own accord must it ever surpass itself anew.
|
Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Gutes und Böses, das unvergänglich
wäre - das giebt es nicht! Aus sich selber muss es sich immer
wieder überwinden. |
| With your values and formulae of good and evil, ye exercise power, ye
valuing ones: and that is your secret love, and the sparkling, trembling,
and overflowing of your souls.
|
Mit euren Werthen und Worten von Gut und Böse übt ihr
Gewalt, ihr Werthschätzenden: und diess ist eure verborgene
Liebe und eurer Seele Glänzen, Zittern und Überwallen. |
| But a stronger power groweth out of your values, and a new surpassing: by
it breaketh egg and egg-shell.
|
Aber eine stärkere Gewalt wächst aus euren Werthen und eine
neue Überwindung: an der zerbricht Ei und Eierschale. |
| And he who hath to be a creator in good and evil--verily, he hath first to
be a destroyer, and break values in pieces.
|
Und wer ein Schöpfer sein muss im Guten und Bösen: wahrlich,
der muss ein Vernichter erst sein und Werthe zerbrechen. |
| Thus doth the greatest evil pertain to the greatest good: that, however,
is the creating good.--
|
Also gehört das höchste Böse zur höchsten Güte:
diese aber ist
die schöpferische. - |
| Let us SPEAK thereof, ye wisest ones, even though it be bad. To be silent
is worse; all suppressed truths become poisonous.
|
Reden wir nur davon, ihr Weisesten, ob es gleich schlimm ist.
Schweigen ist schlimmer; alle verschwiegenere Wahrheiten werden giftig. |
| And let everything break up which--can break up by our truths! Many a
house is still to be built!--
|
Und mag doch Alles zerbrechen, was an unseren Wahrheiten
zerbrechen - kann! Manches Haus giebt es noch zu bauen! |
